"On Monday, 6 January 2014, Rabbi Angel Kreiman-Brill died suddenly of heart failure at the age of 68 on a visit to Chile, where he had served as Chief Rabbi.
Born into a secular family in Argentina, Angel became a Conservative rabbi, although in recent years he personally moved towards Orthodoxy. He was always active in inter-religious relations, and had a personal relationship with the then Archbishop of Buenos Aires, Jorge Mario Bergoglio, now Pope Francis.
Angel served as member of the Executive Board of the ICCJ, and since his aliyah, served as Latin American director of Rabbi Shlomo Riskin’s Center for Jewish-Christian Understanding and Cooperation.
Angel never recovered from the loss of his wife Susy, who was killed in the terrorist attack on AMIA – Asociacion Mutuel Israelita Argentina, the Jewish community in Buenos Aires on 18 July 1994. At the time, he was the rabbi of the Great Synagogue in Buenos Aires. As the community rabbi, Angel had to identify the bodies as they were gradually removed from the rubble – including that of his wife. Angel is survived by three daughters, two of whom are rabbis.
